Chapter 10

“Good morning, dear,” Mike’s mother said as I emerged from the bathroom.

Steam billowed out from behind me like a fog, and Mike’s grandmother gave me a nod of approval as she shuffled toward the dining room. I’d gotten so used to the bog stench that clung to me from the night before that it hadn’t bothered me while I was sleeping, but the second that I woke up it hit me like a freight train. Thankfully, the tree-people still needed to use the bathroom, and there was a fully equipped one that had a waterfall shower so that it wouldn’t be hard on their bark-like skin.

“Good morning, Mrs. Rela,” I said with a bright smile. “I hope you slept well.”

“Oh, well,” the tree-woman said with a faint blush on her pale bark-like skin. “I admit that I stayed up a lot longer than I intended to. But I have so many recipes for honeyed snacks that I’ve been wanting to try. And our neighbor, Rosa, gave us several jars of honey from the beehive that she keeps. There was a surplus this year, and she knows how much I love to cook.”

“What she’s saying is that she didn’t sleep a wink,” Mike’s grandmother laughed from her favorite chair. “But you’ll be able to hunt those beebears for days without going hungry.”

“Thanks, Mrs. Rela,” I said. “You’re literally a lifesaver. This is going to be the first hunt that we go on without at least a couple weeks of research beforehand. Tins gave us maps of the gnome realm, nothing with cities or towns, but we should be able to find our way around. But I admit that I glossed over the beebears. I remember that they have poisonous stingers and wings, but that’s about it.”

“Well,” Mike’s grandmother said and motioned to the chair next to her at the table. “Come sit down and let grandma tell you all about the time that I wandered into the gnome realm and found myself face to face with a mama beebear.”

Rela laughed and then headed into the kitchen to grab the breakfast that she’d already cooked while Atlesia and Sarya popped into the middle of the room using the redheaded elf’s transportation amulet. The tree-woman waved at the girls and watched with affection as we all took our seats like this was a lifelong dream that had finally come true.

“Where’d you guys go?” I asked and reached for the pitcher of water in the middle of the table.

“My house,” Atlesia said. “My brother is really good at insect repellant, so I asked him for some stuff that he uses against bees.”

“I thought the purpose was to attract them,” I teased and poured the girls some water.

“It is,” the lavender-haired girl said. “But what if we come across a mamabear and her cubs? We need to make sure we can chase them away, too.”

“Valid point,” I said and started to pile my plate high.

Mike shuffled in from his bedroom like his grandmother had, and I looked between the two with a grin.
